Westminster College will hold open auditions for the Classical Greek Theatre Festival’s production of Antigone by Sophocles on April 13, 2012, at 6:30 p.m. and April 14, 2012, at 10 a.m. in the Dumke Student Theater in the Emma Eccles Jones Conservatory.
Interested performers should arrive a few minutes early and may audition on either April 13th or 14th. It is not necessary to attend both days. Performers will read from the Antigone script for the audition. The script is available for read only in Westminster’s Giovale Library. The directors ask each performer to bring a current photo and resume. Call backs, by invitation only, will be held on April 15, 2012 at 2 p.m. All cast members are paid.
This production of Antigone will be directed by Larry West, with original music and dance by a local composer and choreographer. It will feature original set design and costumes with a recent American translation as acting script. The production dates are September 7, 17, 19, 22–23, 29–30, with additional dates to be announced in southern Utah and Denver. Rehearsals will be held August 6–18 from Noon to 6 p.m. and August 20–September 6, from 6 p.m. to 10 p.m.
In Antigone, Sophocles develops a tragedy around what to do with the bodies of two brothers who have killed each other in a fight to rule Thebes. One of the brothers is declared a traitor, so his body must remain on the battlefield. But Antigone is determined to give her brother a proper burial, even under threat of being buried alive herself.
