Ask the Astrologer Weekly Question: Is an unknown blockage keeping me from finding love?

E-mail Print PDF

I am 60. I have been single forever. I have always felt that I would rather be alone than to be with someone just for the sake of having someone. Is there some unknown to me blockage that prevents me from finding my man? I have had dates here and there and although these men are good and nice and decent, I just don't feel the spark that makes me want to see them again. I am fiercely independent and most of the time I have no problem being alone. What is my problem? Or is there a problem? My birth date is December 1, 1949.

I don't think you have a problem with being alone. You were born under the fiercely independent sign of Sagittarius. Sagittarius is a fire sign which means that you value your freedom more than anything else. Fire is the element of spirit in Astrology, so being who you are—which includes doing what you please and going where you want to go—is very important. You are ruled by your enthusiasms, your beliefs, and your love of adventure. You want to be open to whatever happens in life and you are always looking to broaden your horizons.

You are not going to change any of this for the sake of being with someone. I think you've spent enough years on the planet to know that that's a zero-sum game. Moreover you were born with your Ruling Planet Jupiter in the zodiac sign of Aquarius. Like Sagittarius, Aquarius is a freedom-loving, independent-thinking sign. This heightens the roving tendencies that are already inherent in your birth planet. It also tells me that you may be more comfortable doing things in a group. You enjoy the company of friends and are always on the lookout for meeting like-minded people. The more challenging area for you is one-on-one relationships. Now you may say it's because you don't want anyone bringing you down or that you even get bored easily, but Children of Jupiter have problems with intimacy. Part of this stems from the fact that Jupiter's Children are notoriously restless and part of it comes from the fact that you believe that you can always do better.

You can be with someone without feeling like you have to sign away your life. My suspicion is that you went through a rough passage a few years ago (between 2007 and 2009 maybe?) and that it's made you skittish. The partner thing can get pretty heavy with all of its expectations and baggage, however being friends with men (and I do mean plural) allows you to enjoy their company and to be who you are at the same time. If you approach men from a friendship place—rather than a romantic interest place—then I think you'll find that they're a lot more fun. And if anything develops—like it could in the spring of 2011—then it would evolve organically. The best relationship comes from two people who want to be together and not from two people who feel like they have to be together. These are relationships borne out people who truly enjoy one another's company and who want the best for each other.

Ask the Astrologer Weekly Question: Will I meet someone soon?

E-mail Print PDF

I recently divorced and my ex husband passed away unexpectedly.  I am ready to date and have tried online, but the whole process is a nightmare and I just do not have the patience.    I would love to meet someone, but I live in a very family friendly town and due to my job, I do not have the luxury to peruse the local hotspots.  Do you see me meeting anyone soon?  December 19, 1965

Yes, I do see you meeting someone soon.  In fact there may even be as many as three someones that you will be dating seriously over the next year and a half.

It sounds like you’ve been through a bit of war-zone (emotionally speaking) these past couple of years with Saturn, the planet of trials and tribulations, squaring your sign and Pluto, the planet of ordeals, winding up its stay in Sagittarius.  These two planets would have kept dragging you back into situations that you were trying to struggle free of.  It’s perfectly natural that you would want to move on and to start living your life as soon as possible, but you’re kind of like a soldier returning from the front.  It’s going to take time to make the transition back to civilian life.

Nobody likes online dating—and that includes the majority of people online.  Nevertheless it does seem to work.  I hear you when you say that you live in a very family friendly town, but you are a single woman looking to be in a relationship and chances are people already know it, so I don’t think you’re going to look out of place at a local hotspot.  Obviously this is about comfort levels and you’re fortunate in that your Ruling Planet is Jupiter.  Children of Jupiter do very well in groups and community activities.  What this says to me is that you could probably meet someone through volunteer work or events that are sponsored by your church or some other kind of social organization.  Clubs, societies, and/or any education course where people get together and share like-minded interests would be terrific for you especially since you were born with your Ruling Planet Jupiter in the social sign of Gemini.  Now I know it will be hard to not focus on the faults and foibles of every guy you meet.  Part of this is because you’re moving out of your normal social circle and part of it is because you’re going to be on the defensive.  Everyone is on the defensive when they’re getting back out there in the dating pool.  But if you can keep in mind that most of the fellows you’re meeting are feeling pretty much the same way, then I think this will help you to relax.  Yes, you’re going to meet some jerks and bores and losers.  Everyone does and it’s all part of the process.  But if you can just commit to getting on out there and giving everyone at least one chance, then I think you’ll start to get back into the groove of things.  It’s going to take time and energy, but by January 2011 you’ll see for yourself that it was all totally worth it.

Ask the Astrologer Weekly Question: Compromise, or part ways?

E-mail Print PDF

My birthday is 3-21-45 and his is 9-13-52. We are best friends, but he has no appreciation of how other people think. What works for him should work for everyone—for instance anyone who doesn't have a Mac is stupid or I am stubborn because I won't go see Avatar.  He told me, albeit when he was frazzled, that I have stupid ideas.  I have tried to talk to him before and it does no good. He just says that's the way he is and he is not going to even try to change. Well it happened again and we have parted ways. I KNOW it's not personal. I know he doesn't mean to be rude but I can only take so much. So should I let my best friend fire me or always be the one who compromises?

First of all you are not stupid.  You’re an Aries and Aries is one of the brightest signs of the zodiac because Aries rules the head.  Your friend is a Virgo and Virgo is ruled by Mercury—the planet of the mind.  Virgos don’t have stupid friends.  However people born under Virgo and Aries do tend to be headstrong—but in different ways.  Virgos are unapologetic intellectuals.  They pride themselves on their analytical abilities and their technical prowess.  This is why your friend thinks you should be up-to-date on the latest technological wizardry like Macs and Avatar.  He wants the best for you and this is his way of saying it.  People born under Aries, however, are what I call  “closet” intellectuals.  For some reason they put themselves down when it comes to their book learning and will often play dumb.  Your friend knows that you’re smarter than you let on and he probably gets impatient when you pretend otherwise.  He may see himself as your self-appointed mentor, which might have been all right once, but not now.

You are in the process of changing as a person thanks to Jupiter, the planet of spiritual evolution, traveling through your zodiac sign. You aren’t going to suffer fools gladly—nor are you going to put up with intellectual bullies.  I think you’re tired of your friend’s intolerance and given the ornery behavior you describe, it sounds like you’ve had enough of his take-it-or-leave-it attitude as well.  Now relationships are all about give-and-take and compromises are a necessary fact of life.  But there’s a difference between compromise and feeling compromised.  A compromise involves two people working out their differences together by establishing common ground.

I think the best way to talk to your friend is to talk about yourself.  Talk about how you need to be who you are in your friendship and not his idea of who you should be.  Isn’t that the point of friendship?  If you can’t be yourself with your best friend then who can you be yourself with?  Being true to oneself should never come at the expense of someone else’s authenticity.  This is something that I’m sure your best friend would understand.  Have the conversation after August 21, 2010 and you’ll find that your friend is a lot more open-minded about these sorts of things then you might think.

Ask the Astrologer Weekly Question: What to expect from son's grand trine?

E-mail Print PDF
My son (born 11/20/91 8:14 am, Orange County, NY) appears to have a grand trine.  What can we expect?  He starts college this fall, majoring in engineering.  Mom in NJ

Your son was born with a grand trine in earth which means that he has at least one planet in each of the three earth signs in his horoscope. In your son's case he was born with four planets in earth signs in addition to the north node. Each of these planets stands at one point of an enormous triangle that appears when you draw a line from his Moon in Taurus to his Jupiter in Virgo, and then finally to the north node, Uranus, and Neptune in Capricorn. This triangle is called a "grand trine". Grand trines confer good fortune and protection in the element where they appear. When the element is earth then you can expect protection in health, wealth, and work. Now grand trines usually show up in the horoscopes of people who have been severely tested in these areas of life, so your son may have undergone periods where he experienced health challenges, financial hardship, or difficulty in school. I wonder about health issues—particularly early in his life. He was born with his Ruling Planets Mars and Pluto conjunct his Sun in Scorpio. One often sees this in the horoscopes where infancy was difficult.

Thankfully that Mars and Pluto energy also gives your son his drive to succeed. He may have been thrown a few roadblocks early on, but these roadblocks make Scorpios even more hell-bent on mastering their circumstances. I like that he's majoring in engineering because Mars is the planet of machines and Pluto is all about harnessing power—whether it's oil, electric, water, or an alternative energy source. These planets will work nicely with the grand earth trine because the earth signs are Astrology's builders. They're famous for their hard work, industry, and love of structure and design. Finally Uranus—the planet that is the most closely connected to architecture, engineering, and design—is almost exactly conjunct his north node in Capricorn. The north node rules over "where you are going" in the horoscope so this is yet another indicator that your son is on the right path.

The Jupiter in Virgo up in the 9th house says that this is a very scholarship friendly chart and that your son can expect to receive money through higher learning institutions. He also has good luck with philanthropic institutions and should keep that in mind for future grants. Finally, your son should always think BIG. Jupiter is the planet of governments, so he would do well working for a city or state government. And by the way, that doesn't necessarily mean he will remain in the United States. Jupiter in the 9th house could indicate working for the United States government overseas OR working for an overseas government. In any case first thing's first and that's getting through school. It looks like your son will be taking on quite a workload this fall, so remind him to keep his eyes on the prize because it's a prize that will yield enormous dividends later.

Ask the Astrologer Weekly Question: Is he still interested?

E-mail Print PDF
My name is Irene. My birthdate is June 8, 1966. Mike's birthday is April 6. What does he feel about me as far as a relationship is concerned? Is he interested in me romantically?

Mike's birthday is April 6, so that makes him an Aries. Aries is a cardinal sign, which means that if Mike sees something he wants, then he'll go after it. Moreover Mars, the planet of passion, rules Aries. This means that Mike has strong feelings, strong opinions, and will pretty much tell it like it is. You would know by now if Mike was interested in you romantically, which begs the question—have you told him what you feel?

You're a Gemini and Gemini is a very people friendly sign. Your Ruling Planet is Mercury and Mercury is the planet of communication in Astrology. Children of Mercury are easy to talk to which is why so many people look forward to spending time with you. Plus you're a lot of fun! You always have a story to tell or an idea in mind for something entertaining to do. When you add that you're a natural born problem-solver then is it any wonder why yours is one of the most popular signs of the zodiac? The problem with Geminis (and Virgos too because they're also ruled by Mercury) is that you can come across more like a friend than a romantic interest. Geminis tend to keep things "light and breezy" and when your Ruling Planet Mercury is in Cancer like yours is, then you're also going to be shy about expressing your feelings. The watery energy of Cancer makes you deeply emotional, but water signs tend to feel their feelings more than express them. People with strong watery energy in their horoscope often come across as unfeeling when the opposite is true. This can give the impression to someone like Mike that you aren't interested and that you just want to be friends. And Mike—being the kind of straightforward guy that he is—will take you at your word.

You and Mike have a lot of things going on in your lives right now. You appear to be absorbed with taking care of a lot of family stuff and maybe even some property matters given that last month's eclipses took place in Capricorn and Cancer. Mike also appears to be dealing with a lot of work issues and is struggling to make ends meet. The fact that you're both dealing with tough times may be the reason for your talks and visits. This can create a bond between you, but not necessarily a romance. At this point it looks like you're friends. If you want something more then you're going to have to be the one to float that idea out to him.

I would advise waiting until after August 10, 2010 to test the waters about how he feels. Mike will be in a much better headspace (and heart space) to listen to what you have to say. Even if he just wants to be friends, you'll find that you mean a lot to him and that he truly values you for who you are.
